If you are a service veteran, a Veterans Affairs (VA) mortgage seems attractive. This used to be true. VA mortgages used to offer more favorable interest rates and larger mortgages for your income. Also, the VA used to be one of the few sources of “no money down” mortgages.

The mortgage market, though, has caught up with the VA. Most banks offer the flexibility, favorable debt-to-income ratios and no down payment features of VA-backed mortgages.

Now, many banks offer mortgages that do not require down payments, regardless of whether you served in the military. Also, banks have loosened debt-to-income ratio requirements, taking away the other advantage of VA mortgages. Also, a regular mortgage requires less hassle than a VA mortgages, giving you the same result for much less work.

Everybody has access to the same features of VA mortgages through the regular banking system. It is easier than ever to get the mortgage that fits your specific needs. As a result, VA mortgages are becoming less advantageous for veterans, and the mortgage market as a whole offers plenty of opportunity.
